Carbon offset investment funds and buyers in Africa
89 matching capital sources on the ASFIP database · Last checked October 2026
Carbon finance reaches African projects in two different ways. Investment funds put equity or debt into projects before credits exist. Buyers and Article 6 programmes pay for credits once they are verified, sometimes with advance payments or offtake agreements that lenders can finance against.
This page lists both groups from our database. Profiles show whether an organisation invests, buys or does both, and whether it is open to direct developer approaches.
Investor or buyer: why it matters
Investors need a project with a credible pipeline of credits, a methodology and a management team. Buyers need verified or soon-verifiable credits, good integrity ratings and clear delivery schedules. Pitching a buyer for construction capital, or an investor for a spot purchase, usually goes nowhere.
Precedents
The Africa Nature Impact Fund is a pan-African fund targeting $100 million for nature and carbon projects and was still fundraising when we last checked. The World Bank's $200 million Ghana clean-cooking outcome bond shows how a carbon-linked coupon and a committed credit buyer (the KliK Foundation) can bring capital to a project before the credits are delivered.
