GCF Readiness Programme and Project Preparation Facility

282 matching capital sources on the ASFIP database · Last checked October 2026

Most climate projects stall before they ever reach a funder: no feasibility study, no climate rationale, no pipeline. The GCF Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme exists to fix that at country level, with grants channelled through each country's National Designated Authority (NDA).

Alongside it, the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) funds feasibility studies, safeguards assessments and structuring for specific projects being developed by accredited entities.

What Readiness funding pays for

Strengthening NDAs and national institutions, building a country pipeline of GCF projects, supporting entities seeking accreditation, national adaptation planning, and engaging the private sector. Funds are requested by the NDA, often with a delivery partner such as a UN agency or regional organisation.

Project Preparation Facility (PPF)

The PPF is requested by an accredited entity for a specific project. It has historically provided up to USD 1.5 million per request for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, environmental and social assessments, and risk assessments, with priority for direct access entities and smaller projects.

How project developers benefit

Talk to your NDA about whether your project or sector is in the country programme, and to accredited entities about PPF support. Other preparation funders on this page — development banks and specialist facilities — can also fund feasibility work if the GCF route is too slow.

Common questions

Who can apply for GCF Readiness funding?
Requests come from the country's National Designated Authority, usually with a delivery partner. Companies cannot apply directly, but can ask the NDA to include their sector in readiness and pipeline work.
What is the difference between Readiness and the Project Preparation Facility?
Readiness strengthens a country's overall ability to access climate finance. The Project Preparation Facility funds the feasibility and structuring work for one specific project submitted by an accredited entity.
Are there alternatives to GCF project preparation funding?
Yes — many development banks, donor programmes and blended finance facilities fund feasibility studies and technical assistance. Several are listed on this page.
